The shutdown will last from August 4 to August 8, with full Metro service scheduled to resume on August 9. Nexus will replace 1,600 meters of contact wire and catenary to improve network reliability and reduce future disruptions.

Work will be concentrated between Bede and Tyne Dock stations. This project forms part of Nexus’ ongoing Asset Renewal Programme, which targets high-priority infrastructure upgrades across the Metro network.

Metro Replacement Buses to Operate During Service Disruption

To assist passengers during the closure, a replacement bus service—Route 900—will run frequently between South Shields Transport Interchange and Heworth Interchange.

These buses will stop at or near all affected Metro stations, ensuring passengers can continue their journeys with minimal inconvenience. Travelers may transfer to active Metro services at Hebburn or Heworth platforms.

Metro Overhead Work Aims to Prevent Future Outages

Nexus stressed the importance of the project, noting that outdated power lines pose a growing risk of unexpected outages. The Metro system relies heavily on this infrastructure for consistent and safe operations.

While the closure may disrupt routines temporarily, the long-term benefits include fewer unplanned stoppages and a more dependable travel experience for thousands of daily riders.

Staff will be available to help customers navigate connections between replacement buses and trains. Nexus recommends checking service updates before travel and planning for slightly longer journey times.

Further works are expected across the Metro system in the coming months. These improvements will support a broader modernization effort aimed at building a more efficient and resilient public transport network.
