Metro-North to Close Breakneck Ridge Station for Trail Work
16.04.2025
Metro-North will close Breakneck Ridge Station on April 21 for two years to support construction of the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail and improve safe trail access for hikers in the region. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Metro-North Closure to Support Trail Construction
The Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail (HHFT) will span 7.5 miles, connecting Cold Spring and Beacon through scenic terrain in the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.

The trail offers hikers a safer route, replacing the need to walk along the heavily trafficked State Route 9D. This improvement aligns with environmental goals and enhances the area’s recreational appeal.
Metro-North announced that the project will eliminate risks to pedestrians by creating a direct and secure trailhead connection for outdoor visitors.
Metro-North to Upgrade Station Infrastructure
During the station’s closure, construction crews will remove outdated low-level platforms and replace them with longer, elevated ones. These upgrades will include ramps to improve accessibility for all riders.
A dedicated pedestrian and bike path will also be installed, linking the outbound platform with the Breakneck Ridge trailhead. These enhancements are part of the first phase of HHFT development.
Metro-North President Justin Vonashek emphasized that the upgrades will benefit transit users and outdoor enthusiasts by providing easier access to one of New York’s most popular hiking destinations.
The trail project reflects a commitment to balancing sustainable tourism and public safety. It encourages more people to use rail transit for recreation while protecting local ecosystems.
Metro-North advises passengers and local residents to plan ahead during the two-year period and follow project updates on official channels.
