Metro-North LIRR Holiday Lights trains on East of Hudson lines

For the first time, Metro-North is adding a diesel-powered Holiday Lights Train, allowing the holiday trains to cover all of the railroad’s East of Hudson lines. On Metro-North, the illuminated sets will run in random rotation within regularly scheduled trains at all times of day and night, so passengers may encounter them on everyday journeys as well as when heading to seasonal events.

Metro-North President Justin Vonashek has described the initiative as an early gift for customers and a convenient way to reach holiday destinations across New York City, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. In his view, the railroad is helping riders create lifetime memories, whether they board the festive trains or simply watch them roll through their town.

Holiday Lights Trains on electrified LIRR branches

On the Long Island Rail Road, Holiday Lights Trains will operate on all electrified branches in a similar random rotation within the existing timetable throughout the day and night, as highlighted by Newsday. This gives LIRR passengers across the electrified network the chance to experience the illuminated trains.

LIRR President Rob Free has noted that the holidays are an ideal time to ride the railroad, describing it as a reliable, greenest and festive way to visit friends and family. According to Free, stepping onto a train covered in colorful lights is a special thrill for children, train enthusiasts and adults alike, helping to spread holiday cheer throughout the LIRR territory.
