Metro de Madrid Advances Line 6 Automation with Major Upgrade
18.07.2025
Metro de Madrid has launched an ambitious plan to automate Line 6, introducing GoA 4 driverless technology and platform doors to enhance efficiency and improve travel experience for passengers. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The project aims to boost service frequency, increase capacity, and optimize operational performance. Line 6, a vital circular route, connects multiple districts and handles some of the highest passenger volumes in Madrid.

Metro de Madrid awarded the contract to a consortium formed by SYSTRA and Ardanuy, which will provide technical assistance throughout the process. Their work ensures seamless integration of control systems, safety mechanisms, and all operational subsystems.

Initial steps include developing essential methodologies and documentation to guide the early stages. Later, the joint team will monitor system integration until full implementation, ensuring technical precision and maximum security standards.
Metro de Madrid Project Scope and Goals
According to SYSTRA Ibérica General Director Joan Serrano, this project marks the company’s first large-scale collaboration with Madrid’s network. He emphasized the strategic importance of introducing automation on an existing metro line, an area where SYSTRA holds proven expertise.
Serrano highlighted that similar projects in Bilbao and Barcelona paved the way for this milestone. He expressed gratitude to Metro de Madrid for trusting SYSTRA and Ardanuy with such a transformative initiative.
Metro de Madrid and Global Automation Trends
The automation of Line 6 reflects a broader trend toward driverless metro systems worldwide. SYSTRA participates in similar programs in Stockholm, Brussels, Lyon, Mumbai, San Francisco, and New York, consolidating its leadership in this field.
Additionally, the company contributed to landmark projects such as Paris Line 1, Lyon Line B, and Santiago Line 1. These successes underscore its ability to adapt global expertise to local requirements, ensuring reliability and innovation in urban transport.
Metro de Madrid’s modernization of Line 6 will set a benchmark for Spanish public transportation, delivering faster, safer, and more efficient service for millions of daily commuters.
