Mercitalia, a subsidiary of Italian railways, has reached an agreement to acquire 78 locomotives from Alstom and Vossloh Rolling Stock, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Alstom will supply 70 Traxx DC3 electric locomotives with last-mile capability, enabling their use on non-electrified sections.

Bulgarian company Express Service is increasing sales volumes of shunting battery locomotives

The contract is valued at around 323 million euros, including maintenance and an option for an additional 30 locomotives.

Vossloh Rolling Stock will provide eight DE 18 shunting locomotives capable of running on biofuel and gas with minimal CO₂ emissions.

These locomotives will be used both for ferry services between Italy and Sicily and in maintenance services.

All machines will be equipped with the modern ETCS train control system.
