Contracts and Timelines for the Melitrén Infrastructure Project
Chile’s EFE signed two contracts totaling $813 million for the Melitrén Infrastructure Project. The first contract, worth $469 million, covers the Lo Errasuris–Malloco segment. Dragados from Spain and Besalco from Chile will execute the construction. The second contract focuses on the Malloco–Melipilla section and has been awarded to Sacyr.
Northeast Corridor Rail Upgrades to Transform US Passenger Rail Network
Construction will begin in early 2025. The first segment, Lo Errasuris–Talagante, will become operational by late 2027. A new station at Lo Errasuris will also open, integrated with Line 6 of the Santiago Metro.
Technical Aspects of the Melitrén Infrastructure Project
The project includes constructing 61 kilometers of railway tracks, with two tracks for passengers and one for freight. The Santiago–Malloco section will have three tracks, while the Malloco–Melipilla segment will feature one track in each direction.
Eleven new stations will enhance connectivity, allowing seamless transfers to Santiago Metro Lines 1 and 6. To support the service, 22 three-car electric trains have been ordered from CRRC Sifang and Temoinsa, ensuring high efficiency and comfort.
Final Phase: Tunnel Construction to Alameda Station
The final phase involves building a 3.7-kilometer tunnel connecting Lo Errasuris to an underground terminal at Alameda Station. EFE has already initiated tenders for this segment, aiming for completion by 2028.
Impact of the Melitrén Infrastructure Project
The Melitrén Infrastructure Project will revolutionize transportation between Santiago and its suburban areas. It aims to reduce road congestion, improve commuting options, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
