MDOT Updates on US-131 Bridge Rebuild in Kalamazoo
14.10.2025
MDOT is finishing a $24 million three-year project to reconstruct the US-131 Kalamazoo river mobiles and improve the connectivity, mobility, and safety of the region’s motorists and rail customers.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

MDOT Traffic Shift and Construction Progress
The southbound traffic is going to be shifted on new lanes and the new bridge through single-lane closures between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Thursday. Subsequently, the construction people will eliminate the temporary bridge and lanes installed during construction. The work done by MDOT is expected to be completed in major chunks by the end of November.
Earlier this summer, the teams finished the US-131 northbound bridge. The traffic shift coming up is an important project milestone that replaces bridges across the KL Avenue and the Amtrak railroad.
MDOT Work Ahead on KL Avenue and Local Impact
The KL Avenue remains closed during the winter months because it’s undergoing extensive rebuild construction. The following year’s construction will reconstruct the roadbed, replace the sanitary sewer and culverts, and install a non-motorized path for cyclists and pedestrians. The renovations will enhance the corridor’s accessibility and safety for the area’s people and businesses.
The $24 million in investment is projected to directly and indirectly sustain 341 jobs. The entire project is programmed for delivery in June 2026, with the reopening of the KL Avenue in the summer of 2026. The effort is the result of MDOT’s commitment to the long-term vision of having a safe and modern transportation network serving both the commuter and the freight communities equally.
