MBTA Drives $850 Million Investment for Safer Transit

Governor Maura Healey said the funding ensures the MBTA can maintain stability and continue vital improvements. The Legislature and MassDOT supported this Interdepartmental Service Agreement, signaling unified state action to strengthen public transport.

Such an investment follows from theFair Share tax revenues that increase the state’s bonding capacity for transportation-related projects. The source of funds enhances progress in the Rail Reliability Program among other capital projects meant for the replacement of aged facilities and vehicles.

MBTA Expands Modernization and Sustainability Goals

MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said the agency’s mission focuses on delivering tangible progress for riders. He highlighted that the $850 million package accelerates projects centered on safety, accessibility, and climate resilience.

Some of the notable projects include the Arborway Battery-Electric Bus Maintenance Facility project, where 200 zero-emission buses would be housed to satisfy the 2022 Massachusetts Climate Law, and the Green Line Infrastructure Program project where old signal equipment from the last century would be replaced with capacity increases for Type 10 cars.

Also, the Widett Regional Rail Layover Facility project is gearing up for the electrification of services in the region, in addition to the ongoing procurement of locomotives, which would help reduce emissions from the transport system in Boston.

The MBTA continues to address deferred maintenance, upgrade accessibility, and strengthen resilience against climate change. These actions reinforce public confidence and prepare the system for long-term growth.
