MÁV Actively Upgrades Its Locomotive Fleet and Improves Railway Transport

The national railway company MÁV is carrying out a large-scale modernization of its rolling stock. As part of the project, three Siemens Vectron electric locomotives have already arrived, highlighting the company’s railway transport development strategy. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
MÁV Increases Its Locomotive Count in 2024
The company has signed a leasing agreement with European Locomotive Leasing (ELL) for modern electric locomotives. Their operation is set to begin in February after testing and necessary technical modifications.

This year, MÁV plans to introduce 55 new locomotives, improving freight and passenger transport. These include 15 powerful diesel locomotives from Nordic Re-Finance and 40 electric locomotives.

Additionally, the acquisition of 15 more electric locomotives is planned by mid-2026. Some of the new rolling stock has been purchased through leasing agreements, while others are delivered directly.
The railway company is also leasing locomotives from Akiem, including Astride models, which are already operating on the Budapest–Pécs route. The company has also signed a contract for 15 ES64U2 locomotives.
Negotiations are ongoing for the purchase of several units in Switzerland, with discussions on future delivery terms. Furthermore, testing of Alstom Astride electric locomotives on key routes continues.
Thus, MÁV’s locomotive fleet upgrade is progressing rapidly. Modern locomotives will enhance the safety and efficiency of railway transport in Hungary.
