Seeking to modernize its railway transport to meet growing demand, Morocco has opened a tender for the acquisition of 150 regional and 18 high-speed trains, valued at $1.6 billion, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The national carrier, ONCF, plans to establish a factory and depot in the country to enhance local railway infrastructure.
The wear and tear of the locomotive fleet of Kazakhstan Railways have reduced to 52%.
According to the competition terms, the winner must deliver the trains between 2027 and 2030 and facilitate the construction of the factory.
Currently, Morocco operates the high-speed Al-Buraq line with Alstom trains, but the new trains will focus on upgrading the existing fleet to meet increased demand.
Ten leading global rail transport manufacturers, including Alstom, CAF, and Talgo, have participated in the tender.
Interest has also been expressed by China’s CRRC, France’s Alstom, Germany’s Siemens Mobility, Japan’s Hitachi Rail, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, and Spain’s CAF and Talgo.
The results are expected to be announced by the end of July, marking a crucial milestone in Morocco’s railway system modernization.
