MARC Train Expansion Boosts Capacity and Service Reliability
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) broke ground on a $35 million project to increase and upgrade the MARC Train maintenance and storage yard in Baltimore County.

This project comes after unanimous resolution by the Maryland Board of Public Works and makes a crucial component of the MARC Growth and Transformation Plan aimed at enhancing rail capacity and increasing the frequency of services.
The expansion of the Martin Maintenance Yard involves new catenary electrification storage tracks, crossover tracks, and a new-for-age inspection pit. Upgraded lighting, water hydrants, and extended air piping systems to enable quicker and safer maintenance will also be installed by engineers.
Since they increase flexibility in the operation, the project will enable the Penn Line to accommodate eventual electric trainsets when Amtrak makes the Frederick Douglass Tunnel canned.
Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold singled out forward-looking investment, saying:
“Investing in our infrastructure in the rail sector today pays for itself and gives a return tomorrow.”
She further stated that the undertaking “is a key factor to our ambition to upgrade MARC Train from a commuter train to a regional train service.”
Her announcement emphasizes Maryland’s designation to establish a sound and sustainable transportation system that responds to increasing demand for passengers.
MARC Train Development Supports Sustainable Regional Growth
The MTA planned the project to coincide with Amtrak’s rebuilding of Baltimore’s Penn Station, which will relocate MARC storage activities to other facilities. This synchronization maintains regional rail service smooth but complements higher-level modernization objectives.
So, in 2027, the Martin Yard will be a sustainability leader, cutting greenhouse and other emissions and facilitating electrified service along one of the region’s most suburban but busiest corridors.
Funding is provided in part from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program, which funding underwrites projects that enhance safety and efficiency throughout the U.S. rail system.
When finished, the project will cement MARC Train’s position as a linchpin of a Maryland’s contemporary, low-emission transportation policy.
