Major Train Cancellations Hit Northeast Corridor Following Immediate Track Power Shutdown

Cranston bridge debris on tracks disrupted service Friday night. Amtrak halted New York City–Boston trains and cancelled several trips. The disruption followed parts of the Route 10 north on-ramp coming down near Wellington Avenue. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

As reported by NBC 10, Cranston police said pieces detached from the Route 10 north ramp. The ramp connects Route 10 north with Interstate 95 North. The pieces landed on the tracks. Also, the on-ramp to I-95 north was closed.
Amtrak service suspension and delays
Amtrak said on X, formerly Twitter, that Boston–Kingston service was delayed. It cited an ongoing signal outage. Also, Amtrak suspended New York City–Boston trains for the rest of Friday.
The company gave no estimate for full New York City–Boston service to resume Saturday. Also, trains already operating between the two cities were being terminated at the nearest station.

For Friday, April 24, Amtrak announced several service adjustments. Northeast Regional trains 184 and 94 were cancelled between Kingston, RI, and Boston. Also, Acela train 2168 was cancelled on the same section. In addition, Northeast Regional trains 176 and 178 were cancelled between New York City and Boston. The Boston Globe also reported that Acela train 2172 was cancelled between New Haven, CT, and Boston. Separately, Northeast Regional train 179 was cancelled in its entirety.

Route 10 on-ramp area inspected
Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins told NBC 10 that DOT was inspecting the area. Electricity on the tracks had also been shut off.
Meanwhile, Hopkins said crews would likely remain at the scene through the night. Residents were asked to avoid the area.
