The latest TBM, weighing 1,500 tons, began operations west of Racoș. It partners with the 3rd TBM to carve two 5.1-kilometer tunnels toward Homorod. Meanwhile, two earlier TBMs continue boring twin 6.9-kilometer tunnels toward Apața.
Environmental Benefits of the Major Railway Project
Project Director Sotirios Koropoulis emphasized the complexity of TBM installation and operation. He highlighted their precision, safety, and minimal environmental disruption compared to traditional methods.
This €573-million project, co-financed by the EU, represents AKTOR Romania’s largest initiative. Alongside this, the company manages two other significant sub-sections of the Brasov–Simeria railway line.
Romanian media recognized AKTOR as a leader in railway construction, thanks to their innovative approach and remarkable speed. Each TBM advances 10-15 meters daily, ensuring steady progress across the ambitious project.
By modernizing infrastructure through strategic planning and advanced technology, the Major Railway Project brings Romania closer to achieving a faster, safer, and more sustainable railway system.
