The €820 million ($898 million) credit agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) supports the purchase of trains for the Metro de Madrid network.
The acquisition includes 40 narrow-gauge and 40 broad-gauge trains, with EIB providing €470 million and ICO contributing an additional €350 million, covering 88% of the €1.094 billion order.
The first of these trains is expected to be in operation by the end of 2026, serving lines 1, 6, 8, and 11, replacing old rolling stock and expanding the fleet for planned network extensions and new routes.
Beyond network modernization, the purchase aims to enhance the metro’s sustainability, with the new trains being more energy-efficient, and their design, production, operation, and maintenance aligned with sustainability criteria.
