Madrid — Barcelona: a new stage of rail integration

Spain’s capital is advancing a large-scale project that will connect the high-speed lines Madrid — Barcelona and Madrid — Levante. These routes link the country’s north-eastern regions with the eastern coast.

The project, worth over $120 million, will fully integrate the routes without requiring transfers. Passengers will travel faster between Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Alicante, and Murcia, creating additional opportunities for tourism and business.

Madrid — Barcelona and strategic transport hubs

The new double-track section will allow Madrid — Barcelona trains to directly enter Chamartín station via a 1,435 mm gauge tunnel. This tunnel will connect the northern and southern parts of the network and link the Atocha and Chamartín stations.

The project will also integrate Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas International Airport into the high-speed rail network. This will simplify logistics, shorten travel times, and make air connections through the capital more attractive.

Special attention is given to the construction of the future underground through-station at Atocha, with the contract signed in February 2024. This hub will become a key distribution point for the entire national network.

Thus, the project strengthens Spain’s position as one of Europe’s leaders in high-speed rail transport. And, with work already halfway complete, the new section is expected to be operational on schedule, delivering significant economic and social benefits.
