Celebrating its 10th anniversary as a joint venture between Lucchini RS Group and Unipart, the company reinforces its long-term growth strategy and manufacturing presence in Northern England.

Lucchini Unipart Rail Boosts Capacity with New Facilities

The expansion includes relocating key facilities to larger, modernized sites. In Manchester, the Wheelset Repair Facility will move from Chadderton to a 63,000-square-foot building at Trafford Park.

This site will also remain the headquarters and center for axle machining, gearbox overhaul, and wheelset assembly. The relocation will improve coordination and optimize internal logistics and workflows.

In Doncaster, the Bogie Service Facility will transfer from Hexthorpe Road to a 102,000-square-foot facility in Warmsworth, four miles away, doubling the available space for bogie overhaul and refurbishment.

Lucchini Unipart Rail expects both upgraded locations to become fully operational by Autumn 2025. The buildings are currently under refurbishment and being equipped with advanced technology and production machinery.

As a result, the company will increase capacity to 800 wheelsets and 80 bogies per month, significantly enhancing its output while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Lucchini Unipart Rail Strengthens Regional Presence in the UK

Currently, 380 employees work across both sites. This investment will strengthen Lucchini Unipart Rail’s position in the North West and South Yorkshire, supporting regional economies and rail infrastructure needs.

Phil Chilton, Managing Director of the company, noted the expansion aligns with rising customer expectations and a vision for sustained service excellence in the rail industry.

“This strategic investment allows us to scale operations efficiently and remain agile as we grow,” said Chilton. “We’re proud to support UK rail through quality engineering, long-term investment, and trusted performance.”
