Louise Haigh Reveals Ambitious Transport Strategy
28.11.2024
The Transport Secretary Louise Haigh unveiled a bold plan today, revolutionizing England’s transport system over ten years. Speaking at Leeds Civic Hall, she emphasized creating seamless journeys, putting people first nationwide. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This vision introduces England’s first integrated transport strategy in 25 years, addressing the varying needs of passengers. By improving fragmented networks, the strategy aims to boost economic growth and better connect communities.

Haigh’s inspiration stems from successful models like London’s Transport for London and Greater Manchester’s Bee Network. Both systems exemplify efficient, integrated services that enhance urban mobility.
The Transport Secretary also highlighted lessons from her Dijon visit earlier this year. In this French city, buses arrive every three to five minutes, even in villages. A user-friendly app simplifies trip planning by integrating buses, trams, and other transport modes.
Haigh emphasized the economic benefits of modernizing England’s transport systems. Reforms will prioritize job creation, productivity, and better access to education, particularly in underserved areas.
“This national strategy aims to integrate all transport modes, ensuring everyone can contribute ideas,” Haigh stated. She launched a public consultation to gather suggestions for delivering healthier communities and greater opportunities.

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin applauded the initiative, calling it vital for economic growth. She envisions a mass transit system fully integrating railways and bus networks, enhancing regional connectivity.

The Department for Transport will oversee this strategy’s implementation, hiring an Integrated Transport Commissioner to ensure progress. The focus remains on achieving better-connected, prosperous regions through cutting-edge transport solutions.
