London St Pancras International Capacity Expansion Announced
07.07.2025
The London St Pancras international capacity expansion aims to more than double passenger volume as Eurostar prepares for rapid cross-Channel growth through 2040. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Phase One of London St Pancras International Capacity Expansion Begins
London St Pancras Highspeed and Eurostar have signed a letter of intent to significantly increase international passenger handling at the station. This strategic move follows a recent study that projected annual demand could surge from 11 million to 35 million travelers by 2040.

To meet this forecast, a multi-phase development plan has been launched. The initial stage focuses on short-term solutions within the current station footprint. Improvements will streamline border control and security operations to support an additional 2,700 passengers per hour over the next three to four years.
Design and Vision Behind London St Pancras International Capacity Expansion
Phase two will redesign the international terminal and improve connections to the main concourse, targeting a new capacity of nearly 5,000 passengers per hour. Project stakeholders plan to complete conceptual studies and feasibility assessments by late 2025, with final construction scheduled to conclude by the end of 2028.
A third phase, planned for the 2030s, will investigate long-term solutions, potentially including relocating arrival processes to upper levels of the terminal.
Richard Thorp, Chief Operating Officer of London St Pancras Highspeed, emphasized the collaboration behind the expansion: “With joint ambition and careful planning, we’re preparing the station for a new era of European rail travel.”
Architecture firm Hawkins\Brown leads the design efforts, supported by Ramboll (engineering), Momentum (pedestrian flow), OFR (fire safety), Montagu Evans (heritage), Gardiner & Theobald (cost management), and Willmott Dixon Interiors (construction planning).
Ramboll director Ramani Armstrong added, “This project is a vital step toward sustainable mobility. We’re honored to enhance such an iconic rail hub and deliver a better experience for millions of future passengers.”
