Locomotive to Hybrid Traction: A Milestone for Tata Steel and Bemo Rail
18.11.2024
Tata Steel introduced a locomotive to hybrid traction at its steel plant in Velsen-Noord, Netherlands. This modernization enhances sustainability in industrial transport and marks a breakthrough in eco-friendly production. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Environmental Benefits of the Locomotive to Hybrid Traction
Tata Steel reinforced the locomotive’s frame and bogies to improve reliability and durability during operations. Bemo Rail replaced two old Cummins diesel engines with a smaller, more efficient engine and a 414 kWh battery.

The locomotive also received a new hood, a modern cabin, and an advanced control system for better performance. Its engine now runs at constant revolutions, improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions. The upgrade reduces particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions by 96-97%, while noise levels drop by 30%.
Future Plans for Locomotives to Hybrid Traction
Tata Steel plans to modernize ten locomotives to hybrid traction by the end of 2026. The project will cost €20 million, showing the company’s commitment to sustainable technology and innovation.
Fuel consumption will decrease by 25%, providing both economic and environmental benefits. Between 2018 and 2022, Tata Steel successfully upgraded four locomotives of the same series, enhancing emission standards.
Locomotives converted to hybrid traction set an example for industries aiming to reduce their environmental impact. Tata Steel’s efforts demonstrate its dedication to sustainable innovations and reducing its carbon footprint.
