Lewisham Rail Upgrades: £90 Million Signalling Project Begins
17.01.2025
The £90 million signalling upgrade in Lewisham has officially started, promising a more reliable rail network. Train services will see changes, especially on weekends, to accommodate the ongoing work. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This ambitious project will replace outdated signalling equipment with state-of-the-art technology. Over the next two years, engineers will install a new system alongside the old one, ensuring continuous service improvements without long-term interruptions.
Lewisham Rail Network Upgrades: Reducing Delays with Modern Technology
The new system will include Automatic Route Setting (ARS) software, installed at the Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre. This advanced technology will allow signallers to manage train movements more efficiently, reducing congestion and delays.

To enhance train speeds, engineers will modify the signalling layout and adjust signal positions. These updates aim to optimize train flow across one of the busiest sections of the rail network in southeast London.
David Davidson, Kent Route Director for Network Rail, explained the importance of the upgrades: “Lewisham is vital for Southeastern services. This investment reduces faults, improves reliability, and benefits thousands of daily passengers.”
Lewisham Signalling Improvements: What Passengers Need to Know?
Service changes will occur on weekends to allow engineers to work safely. Major closures will affect Charing Cross, Waterloo East, and Cannon Street, with trains diverted to London Victoria.
Accessible replacement buses will run between Lewisham and Greenwich, ensuring connectivity for passengers. Rail tickets remain valid on alternative transport, including the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway.
Southeastern’s Scott Brightwell emphasized customer support during the disruption: “We appreciate your patience as we work to deliver better journeys for everyone.”
These improvements, part of a broader £500 million investment in South London’s rail infrastructure, will bring long-term benefits. By Christmas 2026, Lewisham passengers will enjoy smoother, faster, and more reliable train services.
