In January 2023, an unfortunate incident occurred at the Montparnasse station in Paris. A cat named Neko escaped from its owners, a woman and her daughter, who were about to travel to Bordeaux, and hid under the wagons of the nearest train.

The owners immediately approached railway staff with requests to delay the train’s departure so they could retrieve the cat from the tracks. However, they were denied, and the cat was killed during the train’s departure.

Due to the explosion of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, a section of the railway track has subsided

This incident gained significant attention in France and sparked public outrage, with even the Minister of Interior expressing a reaction.

The railway operator was accused of indifference towards the cat and its owners, as railway staff could have intervened and ensured a happy ending to the story.

The lawsuit against SNCF was filed by the public association “Thirty Million Friends,” which accuses the operator of unintentionally endangering the animal’s life.

The lawyers representing the lawsuit believe that there are grounds to prove “intentional endangerment of the animal’s life” as the railway decided not to delay the train’s departure, knowing that there was a cat under the wheels and the consequences it could have for the animal.

The trial is ongoing.
