Latvian Railways has launched a new tender for upgrading nine stations along the Riga–Lugaži–state border line, boosting national transport infrastructure. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The tender includes full reconstruction of platforms and related elements at Inčukalns, Egļupe, Sigulda, Līgatne, Ieriķi, Lode, Valmiera, Strenči, and Valka. Latvian Railways plans to enhance safety, lighting, and accessibility features.

Modernised platforms, upgraded pedestrian paths, and inclusive design standards will ensure improved access for all passengers, including those with limited mobility. These enhancements support Latvia’s long-term sustainable mobility goals.
Bidders must submit proposals through the Latvian e-procurement system by May 20, 2025. The project is co-financed under the EU’s 2021–2027 Cohesion Policy Programme.
Latvian Railways Implements Modernisation in Phases
Latvian Railways is advancing a four-phase programme, aiming to modernise 97 stations by 2029. Phase I was completed in 2019 with 27 stations upgraded using EU funds and local contributions.
Phase II, set to finish by 2026, targets 45 stations on routes including Jelgava, Skulte, Ogre, and Tukums. The $57.2 million budget includes $22.4 million from the 2014–2020 EU fund and $33.5 million from the 2021–2027 programme.
Phase III involves temporary platform construction at 17 stations to improve access until permanent structures are built. Latvian Railways is financing this $1.1 million project directly.
Fourth Phase Targets 23 Additional Locations
The current Riga–Lugaži project marks part of Phase IV, which will continue through 2029. This phase focuses on permanent platforms and full infrastructure upgrades at 23 more stations across the country.
These investments reinforce Latvia’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and efficient public transport. The programme also aligns with EU green mobility priorities, supporting reduced emissions and regional connectivity.
Latvian Railways is modernising its infrastructure to ensure safer, more accessible, and environmentally aligned transport for future generations.
