Federal Funding Boosts LA-San Diego Passenger-Rail Service

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has awarded a $27 million grant to the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN). This funding, provided under the FRA Restoration and Enhancement Program, enables LOSSAN to add three daily Pacific Surfliner round trips between Los Angeles and San Diego. With this expansion, the rail service frequency increases to 13 daily round trips, returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Stretching across six Southern California counties, the 351-mile LOSSAN corridor is the busiest state-supported Amtrak route. Officials noted the critical role of this rail line in connecting major destinations and meeting the region’s growing transportation needs.

LA-San Diego Passenger-Rail Service Discounts Amid Regional Challenges

LOSSAN also introduced a limited-time fare reduction to support passengers affected by ongoing wildfires in Southern California. Through January 24, travelers can purchase one-way Pacific Surfliner tickets for just $10 between select stations. This initiative aims to provide affordable transportation options during a challenging time for residents.

Future plans include further Pacific Surfliner expansions, contingent on funding and equipment availability. LOSSAN is committed to delivering improved, sustainable rail services that benefit commuters, tourists, and local economies.

With the $27M FRA grant, the LA-San Diego passenger-rail service is set to meet increasing demands. The Pacific Surfliner continues to be a vital transportation option, offering reliability, affordability, and enhanced service levels.

Federal investments in infrastructure support California’s goals for sustainable mobility. The LOSSAN agency’s initiatives ensure the Pacific Surfliner remains a preferred choice for rail travel in Southern California.
