L.A. Metro Expands Rail Services with AtkinsRéalis for New HR5000 Vehicles

L.A. Metro has selected AtkinsRéalis to manage its HR5000 rail vehicle program, enhancing services. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) has contracted AtkinsRéalis to manage the HR5000 heavy rail vehicle acquisition program.

This expansion supports the agency’s goal of preparing for the 2028 Summer Olympics, emphasizing the critical need for improved rail infrastructure across the city.

AtkinsRéalis President for the U.S., Latin America, and Minerals and Metals, Steve Morriss, expressed excitement about the project in his hometown, Los Angeles, especially with the Olympics approaching. Morriss noted the firm’s successful track record, such as the Canada Line project, completed ahead of schedule for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. This project has maintained a high performance level with a 99.8 percent reliability rate.
AtkinsRéalis will manage the procurement of 182 heavy rail vehicles for L.A. Metro under a seven-year contract. These vehicles are planned for the B (Red) and D (Purple) lines, with capacity boosted by the D Line extension to West Los Angeles. This expansion is essential for meeting increased passenger demand, especially during major events like the upcoming Olympics.

With over 5,000 rail and transit professionals, the team is experienced in solving complex challenges, aligning client needs with contractors’ requirements to ensure smooth project delivery.
With Hyundai Rotem as L.A. Metro’s chosen heavy rail vehicle supplier, AtkinsRéalis can leverage extensive experience with the South Korean manufacturer. AtkinsRéalis stands among a few consulting firms capable of supporting timely vehicle deliveries from Hyundai Rotem in North America. Their notable projects include the Denver Eagle and Canada Line, both of which highlight their competence in public-private partnerships.
