The contract includes engineering and consultancy services as well as the preparation of tender documents. This project is part of the larger railway network of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
The railway line will run from Shadadiya station, located 25 km southwest of Kuwait City, to the border town of Nuwaiseeb, near Saudi Arabia. Project completion is expected by 2030.
Upon finalizing the design phase, Kuwait will issue invitations for construction tenders. As of early 2025, seven tenders have already been announced for this segment.
Kuwait Supports Regional Transport Integration
The 2,177 km GCC railway project was first introduced in 2009. Since then, participating nations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman have actively pursued development.
In 2019, Etihad Rail of the UAE signed multiple agreements for construction and design. Several segments are already under construction across the region.
In parallel, efforts are underway to establish unified legislation for railway transportation. This will synchronize infrastructure operations and streamline both passenger and freight transit across member states.
Through its participation, Kuwait reinforces its commitment to regional transport cooperation and the advancement of modern, cross-border infrastructure.
