At least 15 people were killed and 18 injured after Lisbon’s Elevador da Gloria funicular derailed during rush hour. Cause of the Funicular Crash
According to Lisbon’s Firefighters Regiment, a loose cable caused the funicular to lose control and crash into a building. The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m., when both cars were operating on the steep hillside railway.
The lower carriage sustained minor damage, while the upper one was destroyed. Meanwhile, firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to rescue trapped passengers and stabilize survivors.

Opened in 1885, the Elevador da Gloria is one of Lisbon’s most historic hillside transport lines. Operated by Carris, it connects the Baixa district with Bairro Alto, offering scenic views of Portugal’s capital.
