Krakow Upgrades Tram Fleet with Pesa
23.08.2025
Krakow has ordered 30 modern Pesa trams, with deliveries starting in early 2028 and completion expected by 2029. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

New Pesa Trams and Network Expansion
The city plans to expand its tram network, so it is investing in bidirectional models. These trams will ensure smooth operation on routes without turning loops, including the line to the Azory district.

The contract with Pesa is valued at €131 million, demonstrating Krakow’s significant investment in public transport development. In addition, the city plans to purchase another 60 trams — 30 three-section and 30 four-section units.
The Pesa 3.0 series features a modern design and advanced technical specifications. Each tram, 33.3 meters long and 2.4 meters wide, accommodates 252 passengers, including 64 seats, and reaches speeds of up to 80 km/h.
With a service life of up to 35 years, these trams represent a long-term and cost-effective investment.
Funding and Krakow’s Strategy with Pesa
Mayor Aleksander Miszalski emphasized that once the contract is completed, the entire tram fleet will be low-floor. This will significantly improve accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility and enhance overall comfort.
To finance the purchase, city authorities have applied for support from the European Union. MPK Kraków has requested $177 million in low-interest loans from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, funds that will be directed toward fleet renewal and network expansion.
Currently, Krakow operates about 330 trams. The fleet includes 110 Tango units by Stadler, 40 ES8N trams by Austria’s Rotax, and 36 Pesa Twist models from earlier generations. However, the city still runs 18 older E1 and C3 trams manufactured in the 1960s.
Upgrading the fleet with Pesa trams highlights Krakow’s strategy of integrating innovation and sustainable transport solutions. Therefore, the city continues to invest in projects that enhance mobility and reduce the environmental impact of urban transport.
