The project follows seven months of joint work between KiwiRail and Stadler in Spain. Together, they developed, refined, and tested the locomotive to meet both local requirements and international performance standards.

KiwiRail DM locomotive design and features

Mechanical engineer Justin Young explained that the DM series is new to New Zealand’s rail network, so meeting regulatory standards required a comprehensive certification process. Testing two units locally before importing the rest from Valencia helped identify and fix potential issues early.

Locomotive engineer Kyle Swainson compared the upgrade to moving from a 1960s car to a modern 2020 model. The new design offers quieter operation, climate control, ergonomic seating, and advanced onboard computer systems for real-time performance data.

Stadler’s Project Technical Leader, Borja Rozalén Valcuende, said customizing the design for KiwiRail’s needs was challenging but rewarding. He believes the locomotive’s performance will set new benchmarks in efficiency, comfort, and operational reliability across the KiwiRail network.

The company expects the DM class to improve fleet efficiency, enhance safety, and offer better working conditions for engineers. This rollout represents a strategic investment in the modernization of New Zealand’s rail infrastructure.
