In early 2024, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem signed an agreement with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) to supply up to 232 railcars. It was the company’s largest order to date in the U.S. market.

The HR5000 model will be used for the two-car trainsets designed for the city’s metro system. The metro trains will be customized to fit the L.A. infrastructure and meet LACMTA’s operational standards.

Hyundai Rotem will handle the delivery of components and perform initial assembly, while Kinki Sharyo will oversee the final integration, testing, and certification. This approach supports job creation in California and meets local content requirements.

In addition, both companies will ensure the new trainsets comply with U.S. safety, environmental, and performance standards, including energy efficiency and modern control systems.
