Kharkiv Without Trams?
04.09.2023
During the full-scale war, Kharkiv lost nearly all its tram depots and half of its tram cars to shelling, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
At present, the city council has no plans to restore the tram network; instead, the decision has been made to purchase electric buses.
Installation of Wi-Fi in Passenger Trains
Before the war, Kharkiv had four passenger tram depots and one freight depot. Now, only one remains.
Kharkiv seems to be gradually losing its tram network, and this process may be irreversible.
For example, by 2012, Kharkiv had 258 trams, but even then, fewer than a hundred were active on routes.
As of spring 2023, just over 60 trams are still operational.
Most of the tram cars were lost in the Saltove depot, primarily during the early days of the war when the depot suffered artillery shelling and airstrikes.
Now, the city council is focusing on acquiring electric buses, with plans to acquire at least 150 units.
Currently, the city authorities are working on a new transport model for Kharkiv. The future Kharkiv is designed around its people rather than automobiles.
