Kazakhstan Supports New Railway Corridor to Boost Regional Trade
15.07.2025
Kazakhstan supports a new railway project in Afghanistan to enhance connectivity and trade across Central and South Asia through the planned Towrgondi–Spin Boldak corridor. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Kazakhstan and Afghanistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct this strategic railway. The first phase covers the 113-kilometer section from Towrgondi to Herat, including a logistics hub in Herat city.

The second phase will extend the route from Herat to Kandahar and Spin Boldak near Pakistan. This north–south corridor spans 790 kilometers, linking Central Asia with South Asia and reducing delivery times for freight.

Kazakhstan Expands Role in Regional Transport Network
Kazakhstan aims to improve trade networks and strengthen its role in Eurasian transport corridors. The Towrgondi–Spin Boldak line will form part of the Central Asia–South Asia (CASA) corridor, offering a direct, efficient freight route through Afghanistan.
The project also includes fiber-optic cable installation along the railway. This will enhance communication systems, support train monitoring, and provide nearby communities with future access to high-speed internet connectivity.
Kazakhstan’s Strategic Goals for Connectivity
Kazakhstan sees this railway as key to expanding transit routes to the Indian Ocean. Improved access will diversify transport options, reduce dependency on northern routes, and boost Kazakhstan’s economic influence and geopolitical position in the region.
The MoU builds on an earlier protocol signed in April 2025, which suggested forming a joint venture with Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan under the International Financial Centre framework. This agreement takes the plan closer to execution.
When completed, the railway will serve as a critical link for international trade. It will create a faster, more reliable connection between Central Asia and global markets, reinforcing Kazakhstan’s role as a regional logistics hub.
