Kazakhstan Strengthens Transport Infrastructure: New Projects and Development of Key Ports
08.08.2024
Kazakhstan is actively developing its transport infrastructure, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

One of the key projects is the construction of the second track on the Dostyk — Moyinty line, which is 836 km long. This route provides access to the Alashankou border crossing, one of two railway crossings with China.
Currently, 60% of all work has been completed. The project involves over 1,000 specialists and 500 units of equipment. More than 7 million cubic meters of earth have been filled for the embankment, which is 94% of the calculated volume. Additionally, 515 km of rail and sleeper grid have been laid.
The completion of the second track will increase the line’s capacity fivefold, up to 60 trains per day.
Construction of the 272 km-long Bakhty — Ayagoz railway line is also underway. This project, which began in December 2023, will create a third border crossing with China. The new road is expected to significantly increase the volumes of exports and transit shipments from Kazakhstan. It is forecasted that within three years, the volume of transportation will grow from 28 to 48 million tons.
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport has also announced dredging operations at the Kuryk port on the Caspian Sea. This port is an important part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). Dredging to increase the navigation depth by 1.5–2 meters will be carried out by the Belgian company Jan De Nul. This will enhance the port’s handling capacity, which currently stands at 6 million tons per year (4 million tons for the railway terminal and 2 million tons for the road terminal).
Similar measures are planned for the Aktau port. These actions are also part of the TITR development plan. In the first seven months of 2024, 2.5 million tons of cargo were transported along the route, a 62% increase compared to the same period last year.
