Kazakhstan will acquire hybrid locomotives from Chinese provider CRRC, to upgrade its fleet and improve shunting efficiency in the diverse climate conditions in the country. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

At a meeting between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and CRRC Chairman Sun Yunzai, an additional order of 270 units was announced.

Yesterday, CRRC Ziyang introduced the evolved CKD6H shunting locomotive with hybrid power unit, while even in May, this year,CRRC ZIYANG launched the new model. The first batch was delivered in the summer, with testing showing it operates in extreme conditions down to –50 °C.

Manufacturing and Service of Hybrid Locomotives

The 2023 contract, also including the establishment of engineering and maintenance centers, is for the supply of 200 locomotives, including 100 shunting units. Therefore, Kazakhstan wants to maintain service provision in its full capacity and even to open up new jobs.

At the present moment, CRRC Ziyang is in fact slowly shipping out models from the CKD6 series. By 2025, the company intends to increase production, and contribute to the fact that the country’s rail fleet is more modern.
