Kashmir rail connectivity marks a new milestone

Northern Railways has launched new services on state-of-the-art Vande Bharat Expresses between Katra and Srinagar, running with train numbers 26401/26402. The new line marks the final step in connecting the Kashmir Valley to the railway network in India, which has been planned for years.

There has been an official confirmation of a proposed stop with a duration of two minutes at the Reasi station, to come into effect from the end of October 2025. Based on passenger responses and commercial aspects, it shall be determined if the stop needs to be made permanent or not. The reason for the inclusion of the new stop has been due to persistent demands in the Reasi station, serving religious and tourist travelers to major destinations.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line showcases record-breaking infrastructure works such as the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world, while the Anji Khad Bridge is the first cable-stayed railway bridge in India. Such feats of engineering represent India’s growing capability to construct sophisticated mountain railways.

Expanding Kashmir rail connectivity for travel and growth

Kashmir railway network expansion helps to facilitate tourism, trade, and connectivity between locations in the area. The Vande Bharat train service has ensured quicker and monsoon-unaffected connectivity to the Valley, especially after monsoon rains inundate routes with floodwaters. The Northern Railways Corporation ran special trains between Katra and Banihal to facilitate unhindered passenger flow.

Reasi MLA and BJP member Kuldeep Raj Dubey thanked the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, and Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw for meeting the long-pending demand in the public. The locals assured that with the new connectivity through railways, there would be jobs and earnings from tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The railway administration is still preparing for further nation integration, so it can directly link Kashmir to big Indian cities in the coming days. The project shows the capability of Northern Railways in handling complex Himalayan routes to provide speed and security in train services.
