Southern Railway Karaikudi junction: passengers, trains and revenue
On a typical day, around 6,000 passengers pass through the Southern Railway Karaikudi junction, where 22 mail, passenger and express trains halt and generate revenue of 1.8 lakh, as reported by The Times of India. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme upgrade is aimed at improving both station facilities and passenger amenities so that daily footfall can be handled more comfortably and efficiently.

Upgraded station facilities and passenger amenities
New entrance and exit arches with a canopy now provide shelter from the sun and rain, improving the immediate station environment for passengers. An additional six-metre-wide foot over bridge has been constructed, and the existing one has been upgraded, easing circulation between platforms and supporting the overall Karaikudi railway station renovation under the national programme.
To enhance vertical connectivity, three lifts have been installed to link the station’s five platforms, making movement easier for seniors, passengers with luggage and people with reduced mobility. Accessibility has also been improved through handrails along ramps and the provision of accessible toilets, reinforcing the focus on inclusive passenger amenities at Karaikudi railway station.
Ticketing and waiting areas have been reworked as well. Extra booking counters help reduce queues, while additional seating has been installed on the platforms. A new air-conditioned waiting room with attached toilets and bathing facilities has been created, along with a baby feeding room, keeping the emphasis on modern passenger amenities and comfort.
Parking facilities, AC waiting room and Chettinad heritage murals
Outside the building, parking facilities for two-wheelers and cars have been upgraded, with separate covered parking spaces for 200 two-wheelers and 26 cars. This dedicated parking area supports smoother access to the station for local commuters arriving on personal vehicles.
Lighting and wayfinding have been strengthened through better illumination and clearer signage across the platforms, helping passengers navigate the upgraded station facilities more easily. Building improvements have been carried out, and mural art on the walkways representing Chettinad heritage now adorns the station, contributing to the overall beautification of Karaikudi railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme upgrade, a programme also covered by Railway Supply magazine.
