Kanpur Metro Expands with Alstom Trains and Smart Signalling
04.06.2025
The Kanpur Metro has opened five new stations as part of Corridor I, boosting urban mobility with Alstom’s advanced trains and signalling systems. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This phase enhances travel across the city, offering faster commutes and dependable service. Alstom’s communication-based train control (CBTC) and metro sets are vital to this development.

All trainsets in the Kanpur Metro were built in Savli, Gujarat. This supports India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” goals. Design and signalling development occurred in Hyderabad, Gurugram, and Bangkok.
Kanpur Metro Supported by Alstom’s Local Manufacturing
Each three-car trainset uses Flexx bogies and the Mitrac traction system. These features cut energy use through regenerative braking and help lower operating expenses.
Currently, 40 trains are in operation. The joint Agra-Kanpur metro network will include 67 trainsets with a total of 201 cars by project completion.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, emphasized the strong partnership with UPMRC. He noted Alstom’s role in nearly every metro project in the state.
Kanpur Metro Underground Stations Ease Road Congestion
The new underground stations will help reduce traffic and provide a reliable alternative to bus travel. Alstom’s CBTC enables real-time monitoring and frequent, safe train operations.
Trains reach speeds of 80 km/h and feature stainless-steel car bodies. Each set includes air conditioning, automated doors, passenger displays, and areas for reduced-mobility access.
This expansion marks another step toward sustainable urban growth and efficient public transportation in the region.
