Canada Plans High-Speed Rail Construction Between Toronto and Quebec

Canada plans high-speed rail construction between Toronto and Quebec. This ambitious project will connect major cities and significantly boost the country’s railway system, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Canadian government first announced plans for a high-speed rail corridor in 2021. The route will include stops in Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, and Laval. Initially, the project was estimated to cost between 6 and 12 billion Canadian dollars, equivalent to 4.2 to 8.4 billion USD.

Originally, trains on this line were expected to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. However, recent developments indicate the government is now aiming to implement full high-speed rail technology. This change will significantly reduce travel time between the country’s major cities.
Canada remains the only G7 nation without a high-speed railway. The idea for this project was first proposed in 2015, but only now is it gaining significant momentum and development.
In 2023, the government issued a request for proposals to design both a high-speed and a conventional rail line. Three major consortia, including Cadence, Intercity Rail Developers, and QConnexiON Rail Partners, have submitted their proposals. The results of this competition are expected soon.
High-speed rail construction between Toronto and Quebec could greatly improve transportation in the region, reduce congestion on highways, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
