The Japanese railway group has acquired a vending machine operation with around 800 machines at major UK airports, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and London Luton. The transaction increases the group’s UK vending machine portfolio to approximately 1,800 units.

JR East operates a large part of the rail network in eastern Japan and has been developing smart retail activities in the UK. Its vending business includes machines selling snacks, drinks, and other products, along with digital equipment fitted with touchscreens, contactless payment systems, and remote monitoring functions.

The acquisition was carried out through JRE Business Development UK Limited, known as UKBD, and Decorum Vending Limited. These companies acquired the vending machine business of Petrie Gough Limited, which operates about 800 machines at airports and other travel locations across the United Kingdom.

The enlarged portfolio brings together Decorum’s mainly rail-based network and Petrie Gough’s airport and travel-location machines.

The deal extends JR East’s UK presence beyond the railway network and into airport retail environments.

JR East vending machines move from stations to airports

JR East has been active in the UK digital vending market since 2019. In 2024, it created UKBD as a base for operations in the United Kingdom and other European markets.

That same year, UKBD acquired all shares in Decorum Vending Limited, a British vending machine operator focused on railway stations. Decorum runs around 1,000 vending machines, mainly across the British rail network.

JR East says the latest acquisition allows it to expand smart retail initiatives across transport hubs. The group intends to apply experience gained in railway stations to vending machine operations at airports.

The company uses the term “smart retail” for solutions involving contactless payment, artificial intelligence, telemetry, and remote data analysis.

Japanese products and vending machine promotions

JR East plans to use its vending machine network to improve services and increase profitability by developing products based on passenger movement and customer purchasing data.

The group is also considering promotional activity through vending machines that include advertising functions.

Another part of the strategy is to introduce vending machines offering local Japanese products, including food, beverages, snacks, and merchandise. The company refers to digital vending machines selling drinks, snacks, and regional Japanese products, as well as “Oi Ocha” machines developed with ITO EN and products linked to railway culture or local crafts.

JR East also mentions TOKYO ONIGIRI, a concept opened in central London that offers freshly prepared onigiri made by Honnoriya.

Smart retail expansion in Europe

JR East says it aims to enter other European markets as it develops its smart retail operations and increases the number of customer touchpoints.

The group plans to use its UK experience and cooperation with local partners, including railway and airport operators, to develop new services.

JR East also says it wants to bring Japanese products into public transport locations and create more attractive customer experiences as part of the JR East Group’s “To the Next Step 2034” strategy.

Decorum Vending holds licences in British stations

Decorum Vending Limited is described as a company that expanded after receiving licences to operate vending machines in more than 90% of railway stations in the United Kingdom.

The company has built an operating system that includes remote stock management, AI-based route optimisation for operators, and a network of vending machines with low environmental impact. Decorum is also developing advertising and brand activation services through its machines.

UKBD is JR East’s subsidiary for the United Kingdom and Europe. It has share capital of GBP25.1 million and is wholly owned by JR East. Decorum has share capital of GBP5.8 million and is fully owned by UKBD.
