Japan to Supply New Trains for Jakarta Metro Worth $112 Million

PT MRT Jakarta has contracted a consortium of Japanese businesses, Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo, to provide eight trains consisting of six cars for the Jakarta Metro in a move that will fast-track Phase Two of the NS Line in Jakarta.

Jakarta Metro Development and Japan’s Continued Partnership
The agreement between PT MRT Jakarta and the two Japanese companies is valued at a total of US$111.8 million, signed on October 21st, 2025. It is expected that the completion of the whole delivery will only take a period of 56 months.

Phase one of the NS LRT is operational since 2019, consisting of a total of 13 stations covering a distance of approximately 15.7 km. This phase employed the same consortium of suppliers in the provision of a total of 96 train cars, making a total of 16 trainsets.
At present, only the North-South Line is in operation in Jakarta Metro. It has a gauge of 1,067 mm and uses a power source of 1.5 kV DC. This is despite the growing population annually that causes traffic congestion.
Jakarta Metro Phase 2 Drives Urban Growth
Phase 2 construction is segmented into sections 2A and 2B. Section 2A is a total distance of 5.8 km with seven stations, already at 53.32 percent completion as of September 25, 2025. Financing of this project is done by JICA, reflecting the important relationship of the two countries.
As more people use public transportation in Jakarta, the Jakarta Metro has been an important factor in easing congestion on the roads as well as in the reduction of CO₂ emissions. Safety features that will be included in the new trains are advanced safety systems, effective air conditioning, and power-saving mechanisms.
Moreover, PT MRT Jakarta has plans to operate in other lines of Jakarta apart from the North-South Line. PT MRT Jakarta is implementing new traffic management systems that will benefit Jakarta residents.
