Japan Invests in Cairo Metro Expansion

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided Egypt with $654 million to finance the first phase of the Cairo Metro project. This is the fourth loan in the $3.8 billion development program. The loan has a 0.75% annually charged interest, 40 years repayment period, and 10 years free from repayment.

This cooperation measures the long-standing confidence between the two states as well as the strategic interest that Japan has in African development of the infrastructures. The agreement also obliges Egypt to buy trains from Japanese companies or joint projects between Japanese companies as the majority shareholders.

The first section spans 19km of track with 17 stations between inner-central Cairo and the 6th of October City. The new project also comprises a new tram service to connect inner-city areas, enhancing transport integration within the metropolitan area.

Egyptian Government to Buy Trains from Japanese Companies

Japanese industrialists Kinki Sharyo and the Mitsubishi Group’s member company Mitsubishi Corporation contracted to deliver 184 worth $262 million cars to Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels. Deliveries will run between 2025 and 2028 to facilitate the timely launch of service, with the line set to transport 1.5 million passengers per day.

Such investments bolster Egypt’s transport infrastructure and generate new employment. Moreover, the use of latest Japanese technology enhances safety, dependability, and effectiveness — the hallmarks of a cosmopolitan megacity that is growing too fast.

The project is of strategic importance since it minimizes congestion, lowers emissions, and injects Cairo’s urban economy. Through Japanese financing and know-how, the city will be able to upgrade the metro network to international levels of comfort as well as sustainability.
