This initiative represents the fifth and final part of a comprehensive financing plan provided since 2013.
The development of the Mumbai Metro began in 2004 with the adoption of a master plan that envisaged the creation of a system of nine lines with a total length of 147.4 km.
Line 3, with a length of 34 km, will pass through the city center, connecting the southern districts with Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and the northern suburbs.
This line will have 27 stations, 26 of which will be underground. The project includes all necessary construction and installation work, as well as the supply of rolling stock and infrastructure development.
Funding from JICA, totaling nearly 270 billion yen, is an important contribution to the implementation of this large-scale project.
Construction completion is scheduled for January 2025, and the line will be commissioned in three stages.
The first section, 12.44 km long with 10 stations, is expected to open to passengers in September 2024.
In addition to Mumbai, JICA also supports the development of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Delhi.
In March 2024, an agreement was signed for the financing of the fourth phase of the MRTS expansion in Delhi amounting to 102.9 billion yen.
This phase includes the construction and extension of three lines with a total length of 65.2 km, of which 27 km will be underground and 38 km elevated.
Loans provided by JICA play a key role in modernizing and expanding India’s transportation infrastructure.
As of the end of May 2024, the agency had approved funding for 89 projects in the country’s transportation sector totaling 4.49 trillion yen.
This highlights Japan’s significant contribution to the development of India’s transportation network and the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
