J-TREC unveils new electric train for Tokyo’s Keio network
12.11.2025
J-TREC has unveiled a ten-car Series 2000 for Keio, a 1.5 kV DC, 1,372 mm-gauge train delivering 20% lower energy use with Hitachi SiC and a ‘Hidamari’ space.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

How J-TREC builds a commuter train for today — and 2035?
The Series 2000 sits on J-TREC’s modular Sustina platform with stainless-steel bodies, so maintenance stays predictable while corrosion resistance improves. For many commuters, that translates into fewer disruptions and cars that age gracefully.

The train draws power from 1.5 kV DC and runs on Keio’s 1,372 mm gauge. It carries five motor cars with asynchronous motors and Hitachi SiC traction, cutting energy use by 20% versus Keio’s Series 7000, because losses fall and braking control improves.
Where J-TREC’s Series 2000 fits in Keio’s plan?
Keio expects the first set in January 2026, with all four delivered by 2027. That timeline refreshes the busiest corridors, and, frankly, gives operators a cleaner fleet before peak demand rebounds.
Comfort isn’t an afterthought. Each car provides spaces for strollers and wheelchairs, while the mid-train ‘Hidamari’ area adds larger windows and light; riders get a brighter cabin, and LED information panels reduce upkeep at the same time.
Automation is on the roadmap. The design supports single-driver operation at GoA2, but signaling and communications must be upgraded first, at least for now. As one planner put it, “we can see the cliff coming” if upgrades lag the rolling stock.
