18.06.2024
Spain has announced a significant investment of €2.24 billion ($2.4 billion) to develop railway infrastructure in the Asturias region as part of the implementation of the EU’s multimodal Atlantic Corridor project, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This move is part of a broader plan that includes a total investment of €2.8 billion aimed at improving the transport network and integrating Spain into the European transport system.

The majority of the investment will be directed towards EU-funded projects, totaling €2.126 billion, which are expected to be completed by 2030.
The remaining funds, amounting to €675 million, are allocated by the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility for projects planned to be completed by 2050.
Spain’s Secretary General for Land Transport, Marta Serrano, noted that the development of the Atlantic Corridor is of strategic importance for the entire country, particularly for the Asturias region.
“The corridor’s activities are fundamental for the infrastructure of Asturias and the entire country. This is a strategic commitment by the ministry that mobilizes a large amount of European funds and state budgets to bring this infrastructure into operation and benefit citizens»,-she emphasized.
The Atlantic Corridor is an international project developed by the European Union, aimed at connecting ports on the Iberian Peninsula with northern France and Germany.
The project includes the construction of new railway links, including high-speed lines, as well as investments in road and port infrastructure.
This will significantly improve the region’s logistics capabilities, increase transport efficiency, and reduce travel times.
Investments in Asturias’ railway infrastructure include the modernization of existing tracks, the construction of new lines, and the creation of modern logistics centers.
This, in turn, will enhance the region’s competitiveness, create new jobs, and contribute to economic growth.
The implementation of this project is also an important step towards sustainable development, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and easing the burden on road traffic.
High-speed railway lines and improved logistics routes will provide citizens with more environmentally friendly and faster travel options, as well as facilitate freight transportation.
Thus, Spain’s investment in the Atlantic Corridor will not only strengthen the country’s transport infrastructure but also significantly improve connections with other parts of Europe.
This project underscores the importance of international cooperation in transport and logistics development and demonstrates Spain’s and the EU’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the transport sector.
