14.02.2024
Iraq is entering a new era in transportation infrastructure development with the announcement of an ambitious project to build an unmanned metro in Baghdad, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The National Investment Commission (NIC) has tendered for the construction of seven lines totaling 148 kilometers, with an estimated cost of a whopping $10 billion.

This massive project aims to create a network of 64 stations, including various types such as underground, elevated, and at-grade.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of four maintenance depots, two control centers, and a power station.
It’s noteworthy that each train will be equipped with carriages for different passenger categories, including a designated “gold class,” a carriage for women and children, as well as for tourists, ensuring accessibility for passengers with limited mobility.
Bids for the tender will be accepted until April 11, but potential participants must pay 100 million Iraqi dinars ($76.37 million) by March 12 for access to the full documentation.
This project promises not only to transform the capital’s transportation system but also to create new opportunities for economic development and improve the quality of life for urban residents.
The previous aboveground transportation project proposed by the Alstom and Hyundai Engineering & Construction consortium had already shown potential for improving mobility in the city.
However, the new tender opens up new prospects and opportunities for creating a modern transportation infrastructure that meets global standards and the expectations of Baghdad residents.
The project is intended to not only be a symbol of technical progress but also a means for the city’s sustainable development in the future.
