Iraq Railway Investment to Boost Trade and Jobs

The project includes the renewal of aging locomotives, refurbishment of the Baiji workshop, and procurement of spare parts and essential rail equipment. These efforts aim to improve reliability and safety.

According to Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Director for the Middle East, this project supports Iraq’s shift toward sustainable growth and economic diversification through regional connectivity and reduced oil dependency.

In addition, the initiative introduces a national railway safety framework. Infrastructure upgrades, improved level crossings, and community awareness programs will significantly reduce risks.

Iraq Railway Reform to Attract Private Sector and Train Workforce

The plan promotes private capital in dry ports and logistics hubs, generating skilled jobs and modern freight services. A Railway Sector Reform Action Plan will guide structural changes in Iraq’s rail operator.

Technical assistance and staff training will strengthen Iraq Republic Railways. Programs will also support the involvement of women in railway operations and management.

By 2037, the upgraded corridor should carry 6.3 million tonnes of freight, 1.1 million tonnes of imports and exports, and 2.85 million passengers annually.

This transformation positions Iraq to become a key logistics hub in the region, unlocking new trade routes and long-term economic opportunities.
