Production takes place at RITES’ facility in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh. The locomotives are designed for 1067 mm gauge tracks used in Mozambique and built to handle demanding operating conditions.

Locomotive plays key role in Mozambique’s rail modernization

In April, Mozambique’s government announced plans to double the national rail network by 2030. This expansion includes purchasing new locomotives and wagons to improve freight handling capacity.

An order for 300 freight wagons has already been placed with an unnamed Indian manufacturer. Mozambique also plans to acquire another 450 wagons and 15 additional locomotives.

Indian locomotive strengthens regional transport cooperation

India views the deal as a strategic opportunity to expand its footprint in Africa’s transport sector. Indian suppliers focus on providing cost-effective solutions along with technical support.

RITES expects successful implementation in Mozambique to become a model for future agreements with other Southern and Eastern African nations. The remaining locomotives will be delivered in phases through the end of 2025.

The upgraded locomotive fleet is expected to enhance logistics efficiency and promote integration of regional transport corridors. This partnership opens new prospects for both African rail operators and Indian manufacturers.
