Indiana River & Rail Terminals support pharmaceutical expansion

Indiana River & Rail Terminals (IR&RT) led a complex transload operation at the Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon, managing oversized industrial cargo with precision and efficiency.

The shipment included two 51-ton tanks manufactured near Houston and destined for a new pharmaceutical manufacturing plant under construction in Indiana’s heartland.

Transporting such large equipment over land wasn’t viable, so Barnhart, the logistics partner, used barge shipping across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Mississippi River, and Ohio River.

After arrival in Mount Vernon, IR&RT used heavy-haul expertise to transfer the tanks to specialized Barnhart trucks for the final leg.

Indiana River & Rail Terminals enable multimodal logistics

IR&RT’s success showcases its ability to manage high-risk, multimodal transport projects that demand precision and strong coordination.

Earlier this year, Barnhart selected the company to handle a similar pharmaceutical shipment through the Ports of Indiana-Jeffersonville.

Port Director Jason May highlighted Mount Vernon’s heavy-lift capabilities as key to the success of the project.

He praised the cooperation between IR&RT and Barnhart, stating it helped advance Indiana’s growing pharmaceutical infrastructure.

IR&RT represents a public-private partnership between Ports of Indiana and Superior River Terminals–Indiana.

This collaboration combines public investment and private-sector flexibility to support the state’s industrial logistics needs.

Indiana River & Rail Terminals continues to expand its role as a key player in Indiana’s logistics landscape.

Its ability to integrate multimodal strategies, meet infrastructure demands, and serve emerging industries like pharma strengthens its position in regional supply chains.
