Indian Railways plans to acquire electric locomotives

Indian Railways plans to acquire 600 electric locomotives, with a tender announced by the national carrier, Indian Railways (IR), estimating the cost at approximately $1.8 billion, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The purchase includes 100 passenger electric locomotives with a design speed of 160 km/h and 500 freight locomotives with a design speed of 100 km/h.

Each locomotive is expected to have a power of 4.4 MW.
The single-cab electric locomotives will be positioned at both ends of the train, with control managed by the engineer from the main cabin and an assistant from the tail.
The winning bidder is required to set up production at the BLW factory in Varanasi, owned by IR, and provide maintenance for the locomotives over 35 years.
In October 2023, the CLW factory in Chittaranjan released the first two WAP-5 electric locomotives for a push-pull passenger train, currently undergoing trial operations.
Additionally, it was reported last year that Indian Railways had signed a contract with Siemens for the construction of 1200 electric locomotives.
