Indian Railways Cuts Waiting List to Ease Travel Overcrowding

Indian Railways has implemented a new policy limiting waiting list tickets to 25% of total train berths to reduce overcrowding and simplify bookings. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The reform is now active across major railway zones and applies to all classes, including AC First, AC Second, AC Third, Sleeper, and Chair Car.

It also includes reserved quotas for senior citizens, women, and passengers with disabilities, ensuring a standardized system across the entire rail network.
Indian Railways Standardizes Waiting List Across All Zones
Before this change, long-distance trains issued up to 300 waiting list spots in AC and 400 in Sleeper coaches, creating confusion and chaos for travelers.
Now, fewer standby tickets mean passengers must plan ahead, but this clarity will reduce conflicts and ease pressure at stations.
Officials explained that limiting the number of waitlisted travelers will decrease last-minute surges and improve the quality of service for everyone on board.
And while travelers may initially find booking more competitive, fewer disputes over berth availability will improve the overall experience.
Indian Railways Seeks to Improve Passenger Clarity and Comfort
The policy is part of a broader modernization initiative to upgrade passenger services and enhance operational efficiency across the network.
Indian Railways expects the changes to minimize overcrowding while providing a more predictable and secure booking process.
