Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a government-run enterprise, will handle the full design and production of two high-speed trainsets. Each trainset will include eight coaches designed to operate at 249 km/h and reach peak speeds of 280 km/h.

The design stage is underway and expected to finish within months. BEML will then move quickly into manufacturing, leveraging new technologies in safety, sheet metal, welding, and train control systems.

Bullet Train Project to Boost Local Manufacturing and Innovation

According to BEML Chairman Shantanu Roy, the company is pushing innovation while using domestic resources. The trains will use locally sourced stainless steel, improving cost-efficiency and reducing dependency on imports.

The entire project will cost approximately $104 million, or about $3.3 million per coach. For comparison, Japanese Shinkansen coaches can cost up to $5.8 million each.

Roy stated that the first coach will be completed by the end of FY26. It will then undergo testing, including climatic chamber tests and squeeze tests, to evaluate performance in extreme conditions.

Bullet Train Prototype Testing Set for MAHSR Line

Once validated, BEML will begin producing 15 additional coaches. These will undergo oscillation and speed trials on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor to ensure all quality benchmarks are met.

India’s Bullet Train project signals a bold step forward in rail transportation. With a focus on innovation and cost-efficiency, the initiative also strengthens India’s position in the global high-speed rail sector.
